The island of Boracay is one of the top tourist destinations in the Philippines for both foreign and local tourists. Last year, the beautiful island catered to a total number of 1,472,352 tourists. Although the 1.5 million tourist target wasn’t hit, it still generated P27,066,835,756.80 in tourism receipts, according to the records obtained from the Provincial Tourism Operations Office (PTOO) in Aklan .
682,832 foreign tourists, 745,266 domestics, and 44,254 Overseas Filipinos/Balikbayans are the breakdown of arrivals on the island for 2014. Comparing this with the figures from the year 2013, there’s an increase of more than a hundred thousand arrivals in 2014. And of the recorded monthly arrivals in 2014, there were 11 positive growth months and the highest attained was 34% in November 2014.
There are a few reasons linked to the prevention of the island meeting the 1.5 million tourist target. One of them was the China travel ban in September 2014, as well as adverse weather conditions because of typhoons which has greatly impacted the province.
Despite not meeting the targeted number for the tourist arrivals in 2014, the Department of Tourism (DOT) stated that it is still remarkable record to have an increase of more than a hundred thousand arrivals. The island is now starting to become a popular destination for cruise ships.
Boracay is still seen as a vacation destination which is safe for travellers and still remains as the Philippines’ number 1 tourist spot.
